Another engagement!

Prince William and Kate Middleton just got engaged. Picture of engagement ring below. It belonged to the late Princess Diana, Prince William thought it would be nice to "include" her mother in his engagement process. Some critics called his gesture "creepy" and "tasteless", i think it's sweet. Better let someone in the family wear it than end up in some Christie's auction i think.

The couple makes a compatible royal pair even though Kate "plebian"ton isn't of aristocratic decent.

Anyway, i read about the news on Yahoo! and i find it quite odd for the report to refer to the William as the "pre-maturely balding Prince". It's like saying it's a bad thing but not exactly. Totally irrelevant right?

Things that make you go Boomz!

Let's not pin the blame on this average ah-lian. She didn't choose to win, the judges are the ones who should shoulder the blame. If not for their bak jiu tak stamp (the eyes were covered) this wouldn't have happened.

So i dedicate this entry to Miss Ris Low-the originator of the word "boomz". I hope one day i'll see you strut around orchard rd in ur jeebra prints bigini. By the way she has relinquished her title as Miss World NOT COS of her "fractured english", but cos she committed credit card fraud. Story here.

Here's a list of how i would use "boomz" in my daily conversation from now on.

  1. I just pumped out 170ml from my left boob, but only 70ml from my right! It's just... Boomz!
  2. Can u believe that the supposed great depression in 2009 turned out to be small dent in the economy? The recovery is simply Boomz!
  3. A woman in indo gave birth to an 8.7kg baby! If she waited any longer her womb will go Boomz!
  4. Argentina might not qualify for world cup, that is so not Boomz!
  5. Fann wong and Christopher Lee are married, Boomz! Her gown is S$300K... I hope she looked Boomz if not she would have wasted a Boomz amount of money.

The battle of the universe

I haven't been following the Miss Universe Pageant for eons. Upon logging on to MSN Today, the indonesian contestant caught my eye.

Miss Zivanna Letisha Siregar (what a mouthful). Weee wiiit... One thing i must say about my hometown is that it is filled with beautiful women. I think maybe it's the ex-dutch colony + plastic surgery + lotsa sitting on old money combination. I always feel like a sam-seng-kia at home. Very underdressed and under made-up, and that's even after trying. I'm so not gonna step foot in jakarta until i lose my baby weight.

Miss Jingyao Wang- out of 1.3billion people THIS IS WHAT YOU COME UP WITH? San-pee-pah ...

Ok maybe the picture above didn't do her justice. Here's another. She's not THAT bad, very typical chinese beauty. Fair, long limbs (chinese are generally taller than singaporeans, especially the sichuanese), long hair, kinda sweet looking.

Miss Rachel Kum- uh...Sorry Singapore. Try again next year.

I don't see any political implications of not getting a rescue dog. A. It was a gift. B. The dog is for his 2 girls. He can't possible reject the gift and disappoint his 2 girls by saying "No girls, we have to get a 3 legged dog to show America we're compassionate". How would the girls feel? Dont' forget tht Obama's a father as much as he is the most powerful man on earth.

Well Done Zheng Jie!

For the first time in history, a chinese made it through to the semis of a big tournament. I can't describe how proud i am, and i am sure that at least 1.3 billion other people would share my sentiments.

Even though Zheng Jie didn't beat Serena Williams who apparently is at the peak of her form, she gave a good fight. 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) is not a bad score.

BTW, I'm a little behind with the scoring system now, i don't know wht happens during tiebreak, is it sudden death? Maybe someone can enlighten.

China's Pareto

The 80-20 principle usually applies to wealth distribution of a country, but i also realise today that it applies to another aspect of China.

80% of China's total common and good sense, is possessed by only 20% of the population.

The Brains (20%)
Enviromentalists can rejoice in the fact that China has banned free distribution of plastic bags with effect from June 1st. We either have to buy, or bring our own bags. That's 3billion shopping bags saved per day, 20% of the worlds plastic saved.
Read here for more: http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/asiapcf/01/09/china.plastic.bags/index.html

To quote premier Wen Jia Bao..."Any trivial matter multiplied by 1.3 billion will become a big problem;Any astronomical figure divided by 1.3 billion will become a tiny number....A little kindness multiplied by 1.3 billion will become an ocean of love;A great problem divided by 1.3 billion will become a trivial matter."

China gah-men has definitely dealt with the entire earthquake debacle with grace, sophistication and compassion. Soft propaganda definitely evoked feelings of nationalism and a sense of unity.

The duhs (80%)
There is no explanation for why we find ashtrays in non-smoking sections, grave translation mistakes on menus, and the million excuses we hear everyday.

Chinese are also extremely lacking in the department of proxemics communication (the need for physical personal space). This is why they like to push, squeeze into trains, or sometimes "touch" you in inappropriate places when they want your attention.

Once a touter tickled my back to get me to turn. When i did turn and found out he wasn't Lester, i glared at him, pushed him away as hard as i could and yelled, "who gave u permission to touch me? Who do you think you are? Are u trying to molest me?"

And today, i wanted to get a bra during lunch. When I was in the fitting room trying on, suddenly the door swung open and a very enthusiastic middle-age lady came in and wanted to help me adjust my bra. I don't think they even understood why i stormed out of the shop.

We change our minds everyday about this place. One day it's good, One day it's goon.

Sharon gets stoned...

LOS ANGELES - Sharon Stone's "karma" is having an instant effect on her movie-star status in China. AP, Wednesday, May 28

The 50-year-old actress suggested last week that the devastating May 12 earthquake in China could have been the result of bad karma over the government's treatment of Tibet. That prompted the founder of one of China's biggest cinema chains to say his company would not show her films in his theaters, according to a story in The Hollywood Reporter.

"I'm not happy about the way the Chinese are treating the Tibetans because I don't think anyone should be unkind to anyone else," Stone said Thursday during a Cannes Film Festival red-carpet interview with Hong Kong's Cable Entertainment News. "And then this earthquake and all this stuff happened, and then I thought, is that karma? When you're not nice that the bad things happen to you?"

Ng See-Yuen, founder of the UME Cineplex chain and the chairman of the Federation of Hong Kong Filmmakers, called Stone's comments "inappropriate," adding that actors should not bring personal politics to comments about a natural disaster that has left five million Chinese homeless, according to the Reporter.

UME has branches in Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing, Hangzhou and Guangzhou, China's biggest urban movie markets.

During the brief interview, which has also surfaced on YouTube, Stone also said she cried when she recieved a letter from the Tibetan Foundation asking her to help the quake victims.
"They wanted to go and be helpful, and that made me cry," she said. "It was a big lesson to me that sometimes you have to learn to put your head down and be of service even to people who aren't nice to you."

Stone's words created a swell of anger on the Internet, including at least one Chinese Web site devoted solely to disparaging her comments.

An after-hours phone call and email to a representative for Stone were not immediately returned Tuesday night.

"To Sharon Stone's comment, it's unlikely that we will respond," said a woman who answered the phone at the Foreign Ministry in Beijing. She refused to give her name or position.
According to the Web-based database imdb.com, Stone has at least four movies coming up between now and 2010, including "Streets of Blood," "Five Dollars a Day" and "The Year of Getting to Know Us."

19 May, 2:28pm, BJ Time (UPDATED)

The world's fastest growing economy stopped for 3 minutes today to mourn for the death of earthquake victims. Cars sounded their sirens, and everyone gathered together in the office and along the streets to bow their heads in silence. The feeling is just hair-raising...

Here's the view from my window, taken with my cameraphone.

Our heart and prayers goes out to those who've lost their loved ones... May God's grace and peace find them and comfort them.
************************************************

To coincide with the nationwide mourning, online portals like Sohu, Tom, 163 have also made their site black and white for one day.

It will normally look like this...

No matter how white you are ...

....you would always have spots of black. Or cases of gray.

Cousin Irena shared 2 very insightful articles from Today Weekend. They happen to speak to my current life experience.
